"Facts"

Hello everybody,
While I tried to get familiar with the homepage I found some key facts and figures about Tourism in Finland.  I think it is good to know as much background information as possible about our “costumer”, therefore a short summary:

With 5, 5 Million overnight stays in total Finland reached a record year in 2011  -> a growth rate of 10%
(     To compare:  Finland:  5,5 million overnight stays /population of 5, 4 million
Germany: 63, 7 million overnight stays / population of 81 million
    Spain: 286.6 million overnight stays / population 47, 1 million )

Markets for overnight stays are Russia (1, 3 million), Sweden (552,000), Germany (541,000) and the UK (390,000). Responsible for the last year’s growth were new markets like China/Hong Kong (+23%), as also Russia (+22%), and Spain (+14%).
Important to know: Over the past years, the Archipelago has become increasingly attractive. Southern Finland is the number one area for most tourists. 80 – 85% are domestic Finnish tourists and only 15 – 20% are international tourists.
- 56% of overnights -> in 2011every fifth overnight was registered there.

The majority of border crossings are transit or day trips. However, the demand is seasonal and strongly concentrated in July and August.
There is one big global trend in the Tourism industry which will support Finland’s tourism to keep on growing the following years. It is the arising environmental awareness.
The Finnish Tourist Board recognizes and actively promotes images that relate to Finland’s high quality environment, its space and tranquility and its national parks.
